Migrating category data
You can use ShopWired's category import system to import category data from your existing website into ShopWired.
When you migrate category data, you can create categories on your website corresponding to existing categories/collections on your current website:
- All the information about the category (name, description)
- The category image and ALT tag
- The category's position within your
- The category page's URL, title tag, and meta description
To migrate category data, you'll need to obtain a download of your category data from your existing website. Most providers should offer a category data download option (into a spreadsheet / ) - if you're unsure of how to obtain a download of your category data, you should contact your existing website provider.
If your current provider does not provide an export of category data, ShopWired recommends using the product import system to create your categories instead:
- When categories are configured for a product during a product import, ShopWired will automatically create the category
- You can later add additional information into the created categories (either one-by-one or through the category import/export system)
Once you've obtained a download of your category data, you can then modify it into the required format for importing into ShopWired's category import system.
Importing category data into ShopWired
Once you have downloaded your category data from your existing website, the data will need to be copied across to a new spreadsheet file that will be used to import it into ShopWired.
ShopWired has a specific format for importing category data:
- Each column in the spreadsheet has a specific heading that must be used
- Each category record is contained on its own row in the spreadsheet
- Category data cannot be spread across multiple rows
- The
parent > subcategory
relationship on ShopWired is created by entering the name of a single parent category into each parent category column (described in more detail below) - By default, you can specify up to 3 parent categories for a category. If you need to specify more, change the setting Maximum number of parent categories that can be assigned to a category described here before downloading the category import template
You can download a category import template from your ShopWired account:
- Navigate to Products > Categories
- Select
import
- Select
download import template
Open the downloaded file with spreadsheet editing software and copy across the data from your existing spreadsheet file into the corresponding columns in the ShopWired template file.
Once you have copied across all of the data, follow the instructions here to import the spreadsheet into your ShopWired account.
Important notes
When copying data across from your existing platform's data spreadsheet to the new ShopWired import template, please note:
- Each category record must be contained on a single row within the spreadsheet
- The column headings on ShopWired's import template must be retained and cannot be changed
- Data must not be entered into any columns that don't have a column heading
- Follow the definitions for each column carefully
- The
Category ID
column must be left blank
Once you import your category data, if you've made a mistake and need to complete the import again, you can use the delete data feature - although please be aware that this will delete all categories from your website.
Parent and subcategories
Parent and subcategories
ShopWired's categories feature has parent and subcategory functionality, allowing you to create a hierarchy of categories. This is briefly defined here, but ShopWired strongly recommends that you read the detailed guidance on categories and category structures before beginning.
When configuring a parent and subcategory structure on ShopWired using the category import system, the name of the direct parent category is placed into the Parent Category...
column.
Importantly, where a category has a parent category assigned to it, the category must appear below the parent category in the import spreadsheet.
In the following example category structure:
Sportswear → Fitness Tops → Ladies Fitness Tops → Vest Tops
- Sportswear is a parent category
- Fitness Tops is a subcategory of Sportswear, and also a parent category
- Ladies Fitness Tops is a subcategory of Fitness Tops, and also a parent category
- Vest Tops is a subcategory
Category ID | Category Title/Name | ... | Parent Category 1 | Parent Category 2 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Sportswear | ... | |||
Fitness Tops | ... | Sportswear | ||
Ladies Fitness Tops | ... | Fitness Tops | ||
Vest Tops | ... | Ladies Fitness Tops |
Category images
Category images
ShopWired's category import system requires that you specify the URL for a category image where that image can be found on a publicly accessible server.
If you do not have URLs for your category images (for example, if you have them on your hard disk), you can use ShopWired's image hosting server to generate URLs for your category images.
